Chapter 9

“It’s in the far right drawer. The one closest to the wall with the clock.” Cassidy chuckled. “Basically, plug it in, put the bread in, and press the green button.”

“Got it.” Marshal sounded so relieved Cassidy couldn’t help but laugh. “Now go back to whatever you were doing.”

Storm let out a long sigh and then collapsed against Cassidy’s chest.

“You care to explain that?” When Storm had heard Marshal saying there was a problem, he’d panicked so hard his entire body tensed. If not for the knot at the base of Cassidy’s cock, he would have slid right out of him.

“Nothing. It was nothing.”

“You begged me not to let him take you. And I don’t think you meant Marshal.” Cassidy eased Storm’s face up until they were looking at one another. “Please, I’m your mate. You can tell me anything.”

Storm bit his bottom lip as he considered.

“You’re scaring the hell out of me.” Cassidy thought that once they put the issue of mates behind them they would have smooth sailing. Apparently not.

“I had another mate.”

“What?” All the joy drained out of Cassidy so fast he felt dizzy.

“Please, let me explain.”

“I’m not going anywhere.” They were locked together for the foreseeable future.

“I didn’t know until last night.”

Cassidy said nothing, but he felt so empty his heart hurt.

“Please don’t look at me like that.” Storm could barely hold Cassidy’s searching gaze.

“Tell me.”

“I didn’t shift because I smelled my mate. I shifted because I was afraid he would find me and take me away before I could mate with you.”

“Back up. What mate?”

“I had a mate in Ottawa.”

“Had?” Cassidy hated himself for wishing his old mate was dead.

“I ran away from him.”

“Why?”

“He hurt me.”

Every protective instinct in Cassidy’s body surged to life. His arms tightened around Storm to hold him and comfort him. “How? No, wait. Maybe I don’t want to know.”

“It’s not like I’m dying to tell you all about it.” Storm pulled his chin from Cassidy’s hand and tucked his cheek against his chest. “Let’s just leave it at he was abusive.”

Cassidy closed his eyes and kissed the top of Storm’s head. Now he had another explanation for why he was so hostile yet afraid. “That’s why you clung to me so intently. You wanted my protection.”

“That.” Storm lifted his head to look at him. “But I also knew you were my rightful mate.” With a quick flickering of his muscles, Storm tightened his channel around Cassidy’s cock. “This never happened with Russell. He tossed me over the hood of his car, fucked me, and then pulled out as soon as he was done.”

Cassidy winced. “What an ass.”

“Russell is a worthless piece of shit straight from Satan’s puss-infected rectum.”

Against his best efforts not to, Cassidy laughed. “I’m sorry, but I’ve never heard such a colorful description of someone.”

“It’s part of my charm.” Storm managed a half grin. “But seriously, if I never see him again, it will be too soon.”

“I think maybe you’d better back up and tell me everything.”

“I don’t want to.
